Day 118: "Floating Letters"

Wednesday night, I stayed up for a LONG time trying to figure this Science in a Bag Activity! After looking through tons of websites, ideas, experiments, I found this one that I like! So, I created a Science in a Bag experiment with it!
The directions and what not are below!
The picture is an example of when I finally figured out how to work it late Wednesday night! The "m"'s and the "s"'s on the M&Ms and Skittles floated to the top! Crazy!

Science-in-a-Bag Activity
“Floating Letters”

Standard: GLE 0307.9.1 Design a simple experiment to determine how the physical properties of matter can change over time and under different conditions.

What you need:
  • M&Ms
  • Skittles
  • Plastic Bag
  • Little bowl of water

What you do:
  • Put the M&Ms and the Skittles in the water, with their letters facing up.
  • DO NOT STIR. I repeat, DO NOT STIR.
  • Wait a few minutes…approximately 15 to 20 minutes.

Describe what you see floating to the top:

Describe what you see happening to the water:

Why this happens:
The white letters on M&Ms and Skittles are printed with edible ink that doesn’t dissolve in water. When the rest of the candy shell dissolves, the letters peel off and float. Some of the letters break into pieces, but a few should survive intact!!

Day 117: Kidside gratitude

Helping out with Kidside felt more like FUN than work! Hanging out with kids always brightens my day! I am always willing to hang out with kids.
I was so excited to get this letter. One of the ladies over Kidside wrote me a sweet note (also wrote letters to everyone else who helped!) thanking me for helping!
This picture is not a bragging picture at all. But, more so, the bible verse on the top.
I've always loved that verse.
Being young doesn't mean that you can't have a voice. It doesn't mean that you can't make a change.

Day 116: Halloween Decorations

It's Halloween time out there!! It's so fun walking around and seeing all the Halloween decorations outside shops and outside houses. I've always loved the classic "Witch on a broom" one. So, I took a picture of this one outside of my sonflower group's usual coffee shop!

Day 115: One of the worst scary movies

The Cabin in the Woods is NOT a movie I recommend. Kyle and I picked this movie out for everyone, cause we all wanted a big scare! Well, that was a fail.
So, regardless of what IMDB says, it is not a scary movie.
I'm not gonna flat out say that this movie is bad...it's just not a good "scary" movie!

Day 114: DRUMLINE

Saturday night, a bunch of us from the UCSC went to the Tech game....although we got slaughtered, the drum line was so much fun to watch! As usual. So instead of posting a picture of the football players, I decided a picture of their sweet drum line would be best:)
Oh, and the guy in the right corner in the black was definitely a better cheerleader than the actual TTU cheerleaders.

Day 113: Kidside Fall Fun Party

Friday night, I volunteered to help out at the Kidside Fall Fun Party to help with the bunnies!! The kids got to come in this little cage and hold the bunnies, and play with them and pet them! The kids were so cute with them:) This is a picture of me with one of the giant bunnies!

Day 112: Science Circus and Prayer time

This is a picture of my group's science project! We were experimenting with which objects absorb more water and why! My group worked so hard on this project so I had to put it on my blog.
But, I'm kind of cheating. I am posting TWO pictures today.
One of my best friends, Sumner, got some bad news Thursday night. Her Pa has meningitis, so he's been taken to the hospital. Meningitis is a very serious illness and it really had scared her and her family. So, immediately after late nite praise, her boyfriend, Cody, announced the news to everyone so that we could pray for her. So, I snapped a picture of everyone lifting up Sumner and her family to God! The situation is completely in God's hands and all we can do is trust in our faithful God.

Day 111: NO MORE SODA

My dad made a deal with me to stop drinking diet soda for 30 days because of all the awful artificial sweetener it has in it. Also, no regular soda or any drink with artificial sweetener in it. This is a picture of my water bottle. It represents my drink for the next 30 days!
I can do this!

Day 110: Volleyball Regionals

My sister's volleyball team won the District Championship! So, Tuesday night, Sarah's team played in the Regions tournament. They got Regional runner-ups, which is awesome!! What was great was that my friend Kimberly came to support my sister's team!!
So nice!

Day 109: My new book:)

This is a picture of my parents reading my book I created for my art class! This thing has taken me hours and hours! But to see my parents' positive reactions when they read it made it all worth it!!!

Day 108: Lady Admirals volleyball!

My sister's Farragut volleyball team is the District Champs! They've got their Regional game Tuesday night!
Mom got me this tshirt to help support those girls!!!
So excited:)

Day 107: Breast Cancer Awareness Month

When my mom and I were visiting a friend at the hospital after his surgery, we saw the hospital had turned their fountain PINK in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month.
In March 2009, my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. After surgeries, she has been 100% cancer free!!! She is so incredible!
So I loved seeing how the hospital had found a creative way to honor all the women who have had to battle breast cancer!

Day 106: Inspirational Quote

When I went home, I found this really cool inspirational book with all these one sentence ideas on how to be a better person...or something cheesey like that! Anyway, this is a picture of a quote I found that I loved!!
I wouldn't say I have any enemies, but I do have people that are very hard to love. Instead of thinking about how their actions negatively affect me, I can positively affect their day! It's time to stop thinking about myself and start thinking about others and how I can help them!!

Day 105: Pumpkin Bars

Sumner and I baked Pumpkin Bars this night!! I realized that I do love baking, but I don't do it enough! These were DELICIOUS!! I ate like 3 of these bars! We had to share them because we were gonna eat all of them! I love pumpkin:)

Day 104: DUCK DYNASTY

Wednesday night was the Season premiere of Duck Dynasty. So, we crammed a ton of people in the Guys' House to watch it!! Most ridiculous show ever, but hilarious!!

Day 103: Fall Outfits

Oh yes, it's time for Fall weather!! Boots and Northface!! My favorite outfit! It was so freezing this night as we were watching the intramurals. I love these outfits!! Skinnies, coats, boots.

Day 102: Mother/Daughter time

My sweet mom stopped by Cookeville and took me out to lunch on Monday:) I was so excited!! She is incredible!! Can't wait to see her again!

Day 101: Van rides

Bree decided to just make herself comfortable on the way back home, so Christy and I were squished against the window. But, it was still a fun van ride back!
It definitely felt good to be home!!

Day 100: UCSC Fall Advance

2 Corinthians 7:1 "Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, bring holiness to completion in the fear of God."
This was our theme verse for the weekend. It was an INCREDIBLE weekend. We cried, laughed, confessed, and grew together spiritually.
I love to watch God work in this amazing group of students!
Typically, we Christians don't confess, for a number of different reasons. We don't trust the people to keep our secret. We don't want to open up to people. We think people won't care. We think people will look at us differently (and sometimes, they will). The early church in the bible talked about confession and keeping each other accountable. Today's church pretends they're perfect and that nobody has any problems.
It's time to change that. It's time to build the environment with people who TRUST and LOVE and CARE. The UCSC is actually trying to make this happen. We want to be the revolution that changes how Christians interact with each other.
I am so thankful that God is using the UCSC to help this happen.

Day 99: BORING class.

Friday mornings are not our most favorite days. Mainly because we have a class at 8:00 AM and it's 3 hours long. This is our bored face. What gets us through the class is tweeting about it and taking pictures. We try to learn things..but when nothing is taught, it's hard to learn anything.

Day 98: DIERKS BENTLEY CONCERT!!

Such a fun night!!!!!!!!! The Dierks Bentley concert was awesome! He's talented AND sexy. Best night:)

Day 97: ONCE UPON A TIME

THIS IS THE BEST SHOW EVER!! I finished a whole season in 3 days!! Netflix is awesome. I finally got to catch up to what's actually airing on tv for season 2! I watched the first episode of season 2 on my laptop. I can't get enough. I had to include this in one of my 365 pictures because this show has basically consumed my life for the past week!
WATCH THIS!

Day 96: My Book of Animals

This is one of my assignments for my Science class...to create a little book with animal adaptations throughout it. I chose 4 different animals: tiger, alligator, bat, elephant. I researched the adaptations and put them in the book. This picture is just a couple of the pages before I put it together. This would be a great 3rd grade science project/lesson!

Day 95: Starbucks=Fall weather

I LOVE LOVE LOVE fall! For a number of reasons: the cool weather is incredible, i love the clothes, the best tv shows are in fall, football....and Starbucks!! Walking around with a hot chocolate or a chai tea latte on a crisp, cool fall day is the best feeling!
Sumner and I went and grabbed some Starbucks before watching Once Upon a Time at the guys' house! Love!!

Day 94: Mommy left:(

We sent this picture to our mom Sunday night as soon as she left. My grandma was having open heart surgery in Arkansas, so mom went to go take care of her and be there with her. God watched over my grandma and her surgery was successful!! But, mom was gone for 3 days....which is a long time for Dad to take care of Sarah all by himself. So, mom was definitely missed. But, Dad did an AWESOME job:) But, Sarah is VERY happy to have mom back!!!

Day 93: Caleb was missed!

This weekend, both Caleb and I came home this weekend. And as you can tell, Peanut really missed Caleb. As soon as Caleb came in, Peanut wouldn't leave his side. Peanut laid his head on Caleb's foot ALL morning long. Seriously! It was the most precious thing!

Day 92: Honeysuckle Hill Farm

I went to breakfast at McDonald's with my Jordan this morning and we saw this on our McDonald's tray!! So fun! This is where like half of our friends work.
Honeysuckle Hill Farm is awesome! There's a corn maze, zipline, tons of kids' activities, and at night there's a Haunted Corn Maze!
Loved seeing this at McDonald's. Pretty sweet advertising.

Day 91: CHAMPIONS!!

Our UCSC girls won the flag football championship!! They're pretty awesome:)
4th year in a row!!

Day 90: Locked out...

i got locked out...i always lock the bottom lock before I leave. then, I lock the top lock from the outside. On my out to go for my run at the park, I closed the door WITHOUT MY KEYS. Ah....I was so frustrated, but thankful I had my phone! One of my awesome roommates Bree came to my rescue! She was studying hard at the library, but sacrificed that time to come save me:) She's awesome!!!
